I have started to read a book called "Making a good script great" by Linda Seger (awesome last name btw, it means victory in swedish). The book is for ppl who write scripts for movies, or more like hollywood-type movies. But my teacher told me that it's good reading material for making comics aswell.

As a story, a comic and a movie are very similar to each other. They both have a beginning, a middle and an end. Also called "Act 1", "Act 2" and "Act 3".

After a lot of thought I realized that there is a very common mistake in webcomics. Especially in very long webcomics. They have a first, pretty good, Act 1. But when they go over to Act 2, the webcomic pretty much goes on and on and on without moving to the last act. Probably because the artist don't wanna end it too early, or because he/she haven't figured out how the third act should be.

This gets worse as the comics gets longer without going anywhere in the story. Sometimes, it may happen that the sublots get more place after time and the main plot slowly dissappears.
Maybe thats why there's barely no webcomic that is "finished", that has an ending. Maybe because the artist got tired of the comic and started a new one (okay I am talking about myself before I started "myo Min myo" ...)

So a big tip for you guys who are planning to start a webcomic; plan out a good beginning, a middle with a easy subplot, and for god sake an ENDING.

We had a homework in school where we should pick out a page in a comic that is bad made, not in the way of drawing skill like anathomy, but as things as panel layout or at which angle the scene is drawn in.

I picked a pretty popular webcomic (won't mention it's name here lol) and I discovered that even though the story is good and the art is good, the artist lack a lot on dynamic-movement in action scenes.

common mistakes are:
- you switch angle too much between two panels, making the two characters switch place.(breaking a so called "rule" called "the line of interest")
- A third characters randomly pops up from nowhere.
- A weapon, that is not visible in the 2-3 first panels, shows up randomly in the 4th panel.

I find it extremely fun to over-analyze comics and movies I watch nowadays. So if any of you wanna have a page of chapter in your webcomic analyzed just reply in this journal.
What I have learned about comics is that it's not the skill in drawing that makes a comic good, but how it is arranged and how the story is build up.

A nice quote from my teacher:
"Kill your darlings".
Which means that even if you sooooo wanna make that beutiful scene/page, you can't have it there if it doesn't fit into the story or in the panel layout.

so for you who are having trouble writing a good story for you comic I truly recommend "Making a Good Script Great" by Linda Seger!
